The historic quayside in Exeter is one of the most attractive parts of the city. With its fascinating history, interesting architecture, and bustling hospitality quarter, it is popular with both locals and visitors. On the Waterfront restaurant and pub is a vibrant venue that attracts trade all year round. Housed in a 19th-century dock warehouse, it is an architectural gem.
South Devon Inns sought to redevelop the main bar and construct a new servery and outdoor counter. The aim was to enhance the bar and dining aesthetics, improve operational flow for staff, and open up more of the outdoor area for customers. The design retained the distinctive atmosphere of On the Waterfront while providing improved customer and service flow, and an enhanced guest experience. Copper and zinc were central to the scheme—paying homage to the building’s warehouse past—alongside reflective materials that highlight the brick-vaulted ceilings.

“Mark Green understood our concept very quickly, and produced design ideas we would not have thought of. We love the use of zinc! Once the overall design was agreed the most amazing number of very detailed drawings appeared. When we came to the build, these turned out to be invaluable and meant that the construction phase went virtually without a hitch, which is a first for us!We are very pleased with the result and thrilled with Mark’s final design touch: a two-way mirror wall with TV monitors behind which will be a fantastic communication vehicle with added pizzazz.” – Mark Eastman, Managing Director Owner of South Devon Inns
